End Of An Era

Just a note to say that from the end of this month, we will switching to only selling online through our online shop and the last day our physical shop at 15 Silver Street, Wellingborough will be open is Saturday 25th June. After that, we'll still be able to get you all your favourite pieces, it will just be delivered to your door instead!

Because of this, we are having a massive sale as a big thank you to our customers. The sale is on both in store and online, and includes clothes by Death Kitty, Max C, Monsalina Chic, Worn Free, Spiral Direct, and even this season's Yumi. It's A Knockout

Morning,

Just given the counter a bit of a polish. I love our counter. Not sure how old it is but the metal plaque on it states it was made by Shopfittings (Manchester) Ltd, Manchester 4. Not sure when the postcodes changed but I think that makes it at least 50 years old (but I'm happy to be corrected if anyone else can help!). It's an old drapers counter. The best thing about it is that I think we were fated to have it. When I was looking at counters to buy, most of the affordable ones were just MDF boxes. Pete said it was a shame we couldn't find one like the old drapers counter they used to have in Milestones on Cambridge Street. Now I don't remember Milestones, but it was a clothes shop in Wellingborough in the 80s/90s (again, I think, feel free to correct me). Anyway, I got increasingly annoyed as Pete extolled the virtues of this apparently fantastic counter I couldn't afford anything like. Then, a day later, we ran into the bloke who had owned Milestones in town, Pete not having seen him for about a decade. In the course of conversation, it transpired he still had the counter (it was in his garage acting as a vegetable rack) and he agreed to sell it to us. Hence, the antique counter. Admittedly, the glass on top is a little scratched and there are signs in the wood that it was once attacked by hungry bugs (they're not there now, I checked!), but it's really distinctive, and even still has the little brass ruler measuring out a yard on the top. All in all, it's Unorthodox, and that's what we like. So yes, that's Friday story time for you!


Today's Pick Of The Day is expertly modelled here by Steve, but since we have it in sizes ranging from XS to L, I think it's perfect for the ladies too. We've been thinking about job titles a lot today. At some places I've worked at in the past, people get so hung up on them, so we take a slightly more, erm, unorthodox approach. I still think one of the greatest job titles I've ever had was during a stint working for Subway, when my badge declared me to be a Sandwich Artist. To be honest, I only applied for the job because I wanted that job title. Currently, when anyone asks, I tend to give my title as Megalomaniac (because as TS Eliot wrote "The naming of cats is a difficult matter..."). I find it amusing, as do most people I tell, but some do just look confused, and others more than a little worried. Isabel, who helps out sometimes, has bagged the title Executive Minion, but I doubt that will be appearing on a CV any time soon. Generally, when I talk about Pete I refer to him as Unorthodox Boy, but he declared this morning he preferred Unorthodox Bitch (more to do with him doing the hoovering than a nasty temperament). Brian, often referred to as our Official Photographer, is equally often referred to as The Hippy On The Stairs. I'm yet to come up with titles for the rest of our helpers (Tahnee especially defies description!) but I'm going to get to work on it (in full consultation with them, obviously). Any of you had any particularly great job titles over the years? Any suggestions? Do let us know.

Well, I've got all the props ready for the window display, which a group of us are working on tomorrow, ready for the street party on Saturday. There's also a competition for which you will need a voucher from the Evening Telegraph. Copies will be available on the day, but I think more details are in today's paper. Also, there is the Odd Man Out competition (possibly aimed at a younger audience, but hey, give it a go) where you have to spot the item in various shop windows that belongs in a different shop. Looking forward to it all!

Bit of sad news, for those loving our Worn Free t-shirts, the seasons have changed, and we can't get any more of the designs we have, so it's first come, first served on the designs left. Had an impromptu visit to RedRock Fashion HQ yesterday and had a peek at some of the pieces appearing in their London show next week. All I can divulge is that high waist skirts with crop tees are a key look, as is velvety fabrics, a bit of shimmer and shine, and bleached out patterns (as I've said before, it's like tie-dying but with balls). It's all amazing, and hopefully we'll be able to bring you some of the gorgeous new pieces once they are done wowing the capital. If they've not become far too massive to return our calls by then! :)

Handmade in Wellingborough, it's made from panels of different denim-look floral fabrics, and sewn on a twisted seam which gives it a distinctive look and makes it hang really nicely. So did everyone have a good bank holiday? I may have overindulged a little so suffering today! Still, I'm here for all of your fashion needs so pop in, or if you see anything you like online, give us a call and we'll send it out to you. Website is almost ready so that will make it even easier for those of you too far away from the shop.

Went to the bank holiday mini fest down the road at The Horseshoe Inn yesterday and caught some great local bands, Those Without Sin, The Tea Rooms, The Transmission, Ali Blake, and The Liabilities. What's more, The Liabilities frontman (and Unorthodox model) Steve was wearing one of our Worn Free John Lennon New York City t-shirts and looked great. We also got a shout out from sound man/DJ Mutley, so all in all, a good night! For those who are in the area, and fancy checking out some good music, Retrobeat is at the Horseshoe on Saturday 18th September, with Leeds band We Sell Seashells, and DJs including yours truly.

Pick Of The Day is this RedRock Fashion brown bleach out tunic vest. RedRock have their first Brick Lane show coming up soon, so get in there now and own something by this up and coming label. The Runaways is the new movie about the 1970s girl band of the same name, that included Joan Jett. It's out in the UK on September 10th, and stars Kristen Stewart (she of the Twilight films) and Dakota Fanning.

As we're quite looking forward to this flick, I thought pick of the day should be one of our Joan Jett t-shirts by Worn Free. You can imagine my excitement when I returned home from a meeting with our web designer, Rich, yesterday, to find that Gossip Girl actress and singer with The Pretty Reckless, Taylor Momsen, had been photographed in the Worn Free "as worn by" John Lennon New York City t-shirt that we have in stock. A controversial figure, love her or loathe her, Ms Momsen definitely has an individual look, and that's what we're all about here at Unorthodox.
