Morning,

Two weeks today until our last day at our Wellingborough shop before we move to online only sales, so we have our massive clearance sale on in store and online. Make sure you grab your bargains!

Was perusing the catalogues of some potential new suppliers yesterday, including Religion and Disney accessories, and La Dee Da handbags. So much nice stuff, so we're very excited about the future!

Had my photo taken this morning for the Northants Evening Telegraph. We'll be in it on Monday, so have a look! Just wish they hadn't caught me halfway through my coffee, having just eaten breakfast, covered in grease with smudged lipgloss (I was saved by my Barry M Glossy Tube!).

Today's Pick Of The Day is one of the pieces in our huge clearance sale! This Monsalina Chic White & Black Mini Dress was £35 originally but is now only £19! The black with white version has already sold out, so get in quick and grab one of these (we have a few sizes left). Just a note to say that from the end of this month, we will switching to only selling online through our online shop and the last day our physical shop at 15 Silver Street, Wellingborough will be open is Saturday 25th June. After that, we'll still be able to get you all your favourite pieces, it will just be delivered to your door instead!

It's a really versatile vintage-look dress (I love mine!). We headed up north (okay, not that far north) to Derbyshire and had a chilled out weekend. We can definitely recommend Old Poets Corner in Ashover as a pub to check out!

Pick Of The Day today are these iconic Dr Marten 8417 Union Jack Boot, £95.00. They are classic black 8-eye DM boots with a Union Jack print on the toe. Bright and bold, these are great for the old school punk look or suedeheads. We love our Dr Martens and everyone should own at least one pair of the 8-eyes.

Already been quite busy today! We've now sold out of the Max C Lace Bow vests and the Worn Free John Lennon New York City T-shirts (last one is off to Sweden this morning!). Hope everyone who got one of those is loving it!

Just a reminder that over the bank holiday we will be shut on Sunday and Monday as usual, but we're also taking Tuesday off too (we're off to Derbyshire for some R&R with the family... We were unexpectedly shut yesterday due to illness, so sorry about that.

Over the bank holiday we will be open tomorrow (Friday) and Saturday as normal (9am till 5.30pm), then shut on the Sunday and Monday as normal. We will also be closed on the Tuesday as well, but open as normal from Wednesday.

Today's Pick Of The Day is this signed, framed, limited edition print, Hidden Woman in Black & White, by Daniel Cheney, £17.50. The price is a bargain, given that it comes ready framed! Daniel is a young local Wellingborough artist (with a great sideline in designing tattoos as well), who is heavily inspired by nature, video games, and comic books (which is one hell of a mix). We're very proud to be one of the first outlets for his work. This print (we also have a coloured version) features a woman emerging from a rose, and is frequently commented on. We also have more of his work in store, so if you're in the area, pop in.

Getting all excited about seeing Karl Phillips & The Midnight Ramblers (we stock their album!) and Great Imitation tonight at Retro-Beat at The Horseshoe down the road from the shop. No idea what to wear yet though. Hmm... I'm sure inspiration will come to me!

On another musical note, after our obsession with Lykke Li's Sadness Is A Blessing earlier in the week, I'm becoming very into the music from the latest Heineken advert, which is The Golden Age by The Asteroids Galaxy Tour.

Had a great weekend. On Saturday night we went to Yum Yum at The Picturedrome in Northampton. For those not familiar with The Picturedrome, it's a fantastic venue that was originally opened in 1912 as Northampton's first purpose-built cinema. It's been really well preserved and it's a fantastic art deco building. Yum Yum itself is always a great night, and brilliant for fashion spotting. Lots of retro and mod inspired looks (I'm personally always fascinated by some of the womens' hairstyles and how they stay like that!). It's always great for some inspiration.

Talking of inspiration, I thought we'd show off a bit of our artistic side for Pick Of The Day today. This is The House On The Hill by Pippa Alice, £20.00. It's a signed original piece of artwork, hand drawn on handmade recycled cotton rag paper. Due to it's small size, it makes a great little gift. All Pippa Alice pieces have now been reduced to £20.00, which is a great deal for this distinctive little gems. This one is perfect for the architect or town planner in your life. :)

Also, most people have found that due to the loose fit, they prefer to pick a size down from their usual dress size, so you might want to consider that if ordering online. We did have a bit of a hiccup with the online shop overnight. We have received orders through, so don't think there was any problem there and it's all back up and running now. We've been browsing through the new Dr Martens catalogue for AW11. There's some fantastic new lines in there, including a few vegan styles. Very excited! Personally, I'm loving their new Mary Janes with interchangeable bows.

Plans for today? Well, we've just changed the window display (it now features the Yumi Marina dress in navy, and the Yumi Yaura Leopard Tunic Dress in mauve). Hopefully got some customers coming back to have a look at our range of Special Evening prom dresses, then might even sneak in a bit of reading to finish off Kate Atkinson's Case Histories. And of course, if you're popping in or ordering online, I'll be making sure we do our best to help! Always the priority, that one!

They look great with little Summer dresses and a tan, or they're perfect for a bit of customisation if you're feeling brave (if not, we recommend replacing the laces with ribbon in any colour you choose, for a bit of contrasting girliness!). Been a bit of a hectic one already this morning. Remember, if you're out shopping or doing a bit of online retail therapy over this weekend, we're open 10am till 4.30pm tomorrow, and all day on Saturday, so pop in store or order online and we'll get it sent straight out to you. Wherever possible, our mail order items are sent out First Class Signed For in the UK, to ensure they get there quickly and safely. For overseas, we always send First Class and try to use a method that requires a signature on delivery. Once the item is sent, you will receive your tracking details via PayPal so you can keep tabs on it too!

I know the weather has been nice the last couple of days, but the shop is located on a side of the street that doesn't get any sun. This means it's nice and cool for weary shoppers, but I'm yet to stop wearing a cardigan all day! So while everyone else is getting sunburn (please tan responsibly!), I'm looking like Casper The Friendly Ghost. Oh well, I'm going for pale and interesting!

Busy day yesterday. As well as customers and browsers, we had lots of visitors. I like to think of Unorthodox as being a bit of a community. So Patrick came in to park his bike in the back room, Matt came in to borrow my sim card, Goth Dave popped in for a chat, as did Carly and baby Leo, and Tracie and Caitlin, as well as others. It's one of the nicest parts of being here. It's great when our repeat customers stop by and let us know how they're getting on with their purchases or make suggestions.

Hope you all had a good weekend. Thought we'd let you know our opening hours for the bank holidays coming up. We will be open as normal, and closed on the Mondays as usual, except for Good Friday (22nd) when we will be open 10am to 4.30pm, Tuesday 26th when we will be opening at midday until 5.30pm, and Royal Wedding day (29th) when we will be open 10am till 4pm. I apologise if any of this causes an inconvenience (and to be fair, I'm moving house that week, so I need to grab some spare hours here and there to do that!).

We were also mentioned in the Northants Evening Telegraph again the other day (yeah, yeah, just call me rentaquote). This time it was commenting on a flyering campaign run by another local town, Corby, trying to persuade Wellingborough's shoppers to go over there instead. Think the headline Corby tactics anger Kettering and Wellingborough in store wars might be a bit melodramatic but is probably infinitely more attention-grabbing than 'Traders slightly miffed'. :)

I've been trying to do my bit as a responsible local business owner, so last night I spoke (alongside other shop owners) at a council planning committee meeting against the application to change the use of one of the empty shops in town so it could become a bookies. Fortunately, the councillors agreed with us, and we stopped it. Personally, I reckon Wellingborough needs more shops, not another bookies! Anyway, it was really nervewracking, but attending the planning meeting was a really interesting experience. I was moving watching people waiting for decisions on home extensions, etc. I kept looking at their anxious faces while they waited for a group of old men (well, they all were!) to wave their hands and decide something that whilst minor to everyone else, was really important to them. It was like a real life soap opera! I recommend everyone attends a planning meeting once in their life. Although I should think once would be enough!

Pick Of The Day today is this Max C London 'Damien' Skull-Studded Handbag in Khaki, £35.00. I can definitely recommend this one as I have it, and I've been using it daily for months now (the sign of a quality bag is that you can fill it with junk, drag it everywhere, and it still looks fantastic, which this does). We also have these available in Grey, but there is only one left in the Khaki. It has a zip on the main compartment, as well as 2 internal pockets, one with a zip. The straps are threaded through to give it that great slouch look, and the silver-coloured skulls that cover the main section are subtle but really original. The black version of this bag (now sold out, I'm afraid) was featured in Heat magazine. Max C, whilst they make lovely clothes, are probably best known for their bags at the moment, which are fantastically designed and really good quality (thus making this great value).

Just given the counter a bit of a polish. I love our counter. Not sure how old it is but the metal plaque on it states it was made by Shopfittings (Manchester) Ltd, Manchester 4. Not sure when the postcodes changed but I think that makes it at least 50 years old (but I'm happy to be corrected if anyone else can help!). It's an old drapers counter. The best thing about it is that I think we were fated to have it. When I was looking at counters to buy, most of the affordable ones were just MDF boxes. Pete said it was a shame we couldn't find one like the old drapers counter they used to have in Milestones on Cambridge Street. Now I don't remember Milestones, but it was a clothes shop in Wellingborough in the 80s/90s (again, I think, feel free to correct me). Anyway, I got increasingly annoyed as Pete extolled the virtues of this apparently fantastic counter I couldn't afford anything like. Then, a day later, we ran into the bloke who had owned Milestones in town, Pete not having seen him for about a decade. In the course of conversation, it transpired he still had the counter (it was in his garage acting as a vegetable rack) and he agreed to sell it to us. Hence, the antique counter. Admittedly, the glass on top is a little scratched and there are signs in the wood that it was once attacked by hungry bugs (they're not there now, I checked!), but it's really distinctive, and even still has the little brass ruler measuring out a yard on the top. All in all, it's Unorthodox, and that's what we like. So yes, that's Friday story time for you!

I should know by now that when I go to the bank on a morning, sticking up a Back In 5 Minutes sign is a tad optimistic! Going to start campaigning for my branch to have one of those priority customer counters so business account holders can get through quicker, and in my case open the shop! I have a feeling I am not their greatest priority but we'll see how it goes!

Got the last episode of Lily Allen: From Riches To Rags recorded on my Sky+ so looking forward to catching up on that. It's been really great (in a schadenfreude way, I guess!) to see that even with an infinitely larger budget, setting up a clothing shop is not the easiest thing. I thought it was just me being an idiot! I've found the whole thing quite inspiring to be honest! Really want to visit Lucy In Disguise when I can next treat myself to a trip to London (that's your cue to buy lots of stuff from Unorthodox so I can!).

I just had to break off to panic that we were having an earthquake, but it turns out it was just the roadworks people round the back of the shop driving a... erm, is it a steamroller if there's no steam? Anyway, it made the entire building shake. It's too early in the day for noisy machinery (says the girl currently listening to an Alec Empire track).

How was your weekend? We admittedly spent most of it in the Horseshoe, first on Saturday night for Retro-Beat with The Lucky 27's playing live, then on Sunday for their fantastic comedy night. Finished reading Stieg Larsson's The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets' Nest. As it's the last book in the Millennium trilogy, I'm feeling a bit at a loss now! Have just started Kate Atkinson's Started Early, Took My Dog, though, and will report back on that one.

I do like to try to stick to music related blog titles (this one is from Moulin Rouge). Granted, ones relating to today's Pick Of The Day were limited so this is all I could come up with. I'd already used Nelly The Elephant on our Elephant Border Shoulder Bag.

Just had a chat with our electricity supplier and explained that repeatedly sending me a letter telling me their metre reader says the property is empty leaves me a bit miffed. It's like telling someone their house looks abandoned! They were very nice about it, though. But if you are our metre reader, you're not in my good books! Cheeky sod!

On my ongoing fun with telemarketers, I had a call from one towards the end of yesterday. As I was having a conversation with someone in the shop, I said I wasn't here and pretended to be Isabel (our executive minion). They'll probably call back today and I'll have to speak to them. I should have told them they wanted Dave (our fictitious manager mentioned in previous blog posts) but I'd already used the 'she' pronoun in regards to me not being here. Need to think a little quicker in future! Plus, I only tend to bring Dave into play when they assume the business owner is a man, just to get my own back.

In light of yesterday's budget, I though we should have a bit of a gift-giving bargain for our Pick Of The Day. We're celebrating the first bit of almost warm weather by having the door of the shop open. Except our side of the street isn't getting any sunshine so I'm a bit chilly and I'd forgotten how noisy the traffic was. Dealt with all those though by putting on a cardigan and turning the stereo up!

The improvement in the weather seems to be pushing you all towards our Yumi gear, with the Ormanda Floral Lace Skirt and Xaviera Parrot Sun Dress proving very popular this week. But let's not count our summer chickens before they're roasted, so we've knocked £10 off our Yumi Malin Blazer as well, because it's always best to take a jacket, just to be on the safe side (I sound like my mother!).

Pick Of The Day today are these Dr Marten 1460 8-Eye Boots in Purple, £85.00. We currently have a pair of size 9's in our window and they are even more lovely IRL than in the photo. Dr Martens are really coming back into style at the moment, and look especially great with little summer floral dresses and skirts, or peaking out discreetly from under a maxi dress. I'll admit, I'm a bit of a DM collector, and I find they are fantastic for lasting for ages and looking awesome season after season.

Hope you all had a good weekend. We have now heard that the patent Dr Martens that we've been waiting on are now due in around 15th April. We apologise for the delay to those who have them pre-ordered. For those who don't and who fancy a pair, the quicker you get your order in, the more likely we are to get it to you in the size and colour you want quickly. So why not treat yourself this spring?

We had local band The Liabilities in on Saturday to do a shoot with our photographer, Brian Chapman. It was the usual carnage associated with those lot (I keep finding random scarves and jackets upstairs now). If you're in the Northampton area on Friday, they're playing at the Avenue campus Student Union.

Pick Of The Day today is this perfectly punky Death Kitty Purple Tartan Skirt, £15.00 (we also have a few left of the red tartan version). Going to change the window display later. Always enjoy doing my stylist bit! Going to put some more of our Yumi pieces on the female mannequins, and have a great pair of Dr Martens 8-Eye boots in Purple to put on display as well (they were from a cancelled order, so if anyone's a size 9, give these a try!).

Pete's in the corner designing the poster for the next Retro-Beat at the Horseshoe Inn, and our photographer Brian is coming in later to do his thing in the Unorthodox studio upstairs. So if you're in town today, pop in and say hello!

Pick Of The Day is this Yumi Xaviera Parrot Sun Dress, £50.00, that went up on our online shop yesterday. It's available in black, navy or beige, and has a contrasting coloured print of exotic flowers and parrots, both front and back. The neckline is decorated with coloured beads, and it has a very elegant cross-strap back. It's a lovely piece for your summer wardrobe, and our customers have already been having dilemmas over which colour they prefer (I would always recommend buying all three, but then I would say that!). I think it's really typical of Yumi's style, with the colourful print and simple lines, so if you're a fan of the label, this is a must-have.

Morning,

Opened slightly late today as I went to a breakfast meeting about Wellingborough town centre. It also gave me chance to check out the new cafe on Church Street, Bewitched, which I'd been meaning to go in for ages. After a coffee and a piece of cake, I am a convert. It's a beautiful building, and the patio outside will be lovely when the weather gets warmer, so if you get chance and you're in the area, it's the perfect place to relax and refuel after a spree in here. :)

Just finished reading Irene Nemirovsky's Suite Francaise which is a fascinating account of life in France during World War II, mainly the exodus from Paris during the invasion and then life in a village during the occupation, and examining all of the issues as well as the French class system of the time. The appendix containing first her correspondance, and then that of her husband, publishers and supporters following her arrest and deportation are really moving, especially given that they were still trying to find her (and her husband) years after their deaths in concentration camps. Cheerful, no, but definitely worth reading. Next I'm starting on the final book in Stieg Larsson's Millennium trilogy, The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets' Nest. I've really enjoyed the previous two books, and will be quite gutted to get to the end of the trilogy, but at least this is the longest one so I should be a while. Then I can check out the Swedish film versions (and the American ones, once they are released, I think starting later this year).

Anyway, back onto clothes (that's why we're here, right?)...

Bit of an end of an era coming to Wellingborough. The Chinese restaurant, Chi Chi's, down the road is going to be under new management as the current owners are retiring. I've been going in there since I was about 9 (erm, that'd be about 20 years then) so I'm going to miss them! So last night we went down there for our final meal (unless I can wangle another out of friends or relatives before they leave at the beginning of April). Was almost emotional! Suffice to say, I did not require a large breakfast this morning!

I would do what everyone else is doing and discuss the first part of the new series that started last night, Lily Allen: From Riches To Rags, but I was out so I have it recorded and will catch up soon. Anything involving Mary Portas always gets my vote, though (I can pretend it's work-related).

We are marking the passing of Nate Dogg (because as I have divulged above, I am of a certain age!) so thought it was a good excuse to relive his contribution to Warren G's Regulate (if you're looking at the Blogspot blog, there's a video here. If you're reading it on our Facebook notes, look for the link at the bottom that lets you view the original post to see it).

It's going to be our fantastic photographer Brian Chapman taking the piccies, and we've got local artist Rebecca Sturdgess modelling for us again. Very excited!

Lots of you seem to be gearing up for summer weddings, and our Special Evening dresses are proving very popular this week (some even being picked out for the bridesmaids!). For those not needing to go so formal, we also have some lovely pieces by Monsalina Chic and Yumi that would be great for special occasions. As I mentioned it in yesterday's blog post, I thought we should have this Yumi Malin Blazer, £55.00, as Pick Of The Day. Hope you all had a good weekend. Today is both International Women's Day and Pancake Day. International Women's Day is about highlighting the causes of equality and women's rights, and the people who fight for them. It's my weekly nail painting day... I know I'll be starting and finishing with Barry M 3 In 1 Nail Paint, but not sure what colour to go for. My usual favourite is Barry M Neon Nail Paint in Neon Pink topped off with Barry M Instant Nail Effects so might go with that. Or maybe I should go purple to match my hair? Anyway...

We may get some more in at some point, but as always, we try to only get things in limited numbers to keep them new, exciting and desirable, so it won't be straight away. I think them selling so quickly is a testament to our customers' fantastic taste and our lousy weather!

Best seller of the Yumi collection so far? The Larinda top. It's not on the online shop yet, but we'll get it up there as soon as possible.

You know how the magazines are all raving about the trend for colour at the moment? Well make sure you check out our RedRock Fashion pieces. If you want colour, this is the way to wear it! Not all of the pieces we have in store are on the online shop yet but I'll try to sort this as soon as possible.

We have a couple of kimonos in the shop (on the website soon, I promise!) that are getting lots of attention. These are ethically traded and reversable, so you can either wear the patterned pink side with the black trim, or the black side with the embroidered dragon and pink trim. Yes, I'll admit, it's a bit random, but I really like them!

Had a great weekend. The Unorthodox team were out in force for The Horseshoe's first Comedy Night on Sunday, which was fantastic. Oh, and it was my birthday. I don't feel any older, yet, though. Which is nice.

Audrey Hepburn umbrellas are selling fast (the weather is probably helping!) so if you want to stay dry in the most stylish way possible, make one yours today!

We had a great photo shoot on Saturday with the new Yumi pieces. Local artist Rebecca Sturdgess modelled for us (we have lots of her art in stock, so check that out), and she did a fantastic job. Our resident photographer Brian Chapman of Brian Chapman Photography was running the show, and it was great fun. Loved seeing the Yumi pieces being worn. Once the photos are ready, we'll have them up on our Facebook page, and you'll be able to see them on the Yumi item pages when they're on the online shop.

Me and Pete went to a party for his uncle's golden wedding last night and may have overindulged, while enjoying a tribute act to Billy Fury, Elvis Presley and Shakin Stevens. Tonight we can recommend something slightly more modern for those in Wellingborough, as it's Retro-Beat down the road at The Horseshoe, featuring live bands Seven Caves and Snakeman 3. My spirit is looking forward to it, but right now my body is just not sure! Anyone else any exciting plans for the weekend?

Going to blog as quickly as possible today as we have lots of new things to get onto the online shop. Will show you them tomorrow, or keep your eyes on the Facebook page and Twitter feed for when they go live.

Morning,

New in the shop today is a fantastic canvas painted by Dorne Boddington, the talented artist behind the Smashing Glass pieces we stock. Taking inspiration from early comic book art, it's a fantastic painted of Thor (movie coming out soon!). It is now on display in the shop, and available to buy. I'll try to get it photographed and onto the online shop soon.

I'm told our fantastic new ethically traded products will be in towards the end of next week, so looking forward to showing those off to all of you!

Pick Of The Day today are these Stargazer False Eyelashes. Great for adding a little glamour to any look, they are easy to use and the glue is included. Take care of them, and they can be reused multiple times. Available in a variety of styles and colours, we can also order in the Stargazer feather eyelashes specially if that's what you're after (much loved by the burlesque community!). Top tips for application that we've been told include putting eyeshadow on after the lashes (using tissue to stop it falling on the lashes) to help them stick, and putting black eyeliner on the upper lids first so any small gaps between the false lashes and your real ones aren't noticable. Finish with a bit of clear mascara on your natural lashes to bring them into line, and voila, the windows to your soul are all spruced up!

Morning,

Had a great meeting with a new supplier yesterday and we're going to be bringing you some fantastic ethically traded bits from them very soon, including Audrey Hepburn umbrellas, beautiful bags and scarves, kimonos, incense, and other lovely odds and ends. They're a company that put a lot of money back into the communities they work with around the world, originally started by Buddhists, so I'm hoping we'll all get some good karma out of it!

One of them is the Max C Jersey Rosette Bubble Dres which when I checked last night was on Max C's own online shop for it's RRP of £42 and we have it in the sale for only £20!

Oh, and an update on Dave, the fictitious manager... he just received a phone call. I'm still giggling!

Pick Of The Day is this Monsalina Chic Black Jersey Dress. It's a lovely long-sleeved dress that is that rarest of rare things, smart *and* comfortable! With a loose fit, but enough expert tailoring to keep it shapely, it has fantastic black shiny plastic discs detailing the waist, and ties at the back with a thick black ribbon. It can be dressed up, worn for work, or just teamed with some flats. I grabbed one of these when they first came in (so I can advise anyone to consider trying a dress size lower than they may normally take... which is always nice!) and I've found no end of occasions so far where it's been the perfect choice (and don't we all want to get our money's worth!). The fabric is really soft too, making it all cosy, which is great for this time of year when it's still a bit drafty! As with all of our dresses, we only get limited stock so when it's gone, it's gone! So don't delay, this is one you won't suffer with shopper's remorse for!

We're getting that bit closer to the weekend... going out? Even if you don't want to buy a new outfit, check out our selection of hair colours, false lashes and make-up! Although really, just buy a new outfit, you'll love it! Hehe.

We're going to be shut for an hour or so this afternoon to meet with a potential new supplier. They do all sorts of fantastic ethically traded products so we'll see if we can't find you all some fantastic bits!

I have a confession to make. We've been getting so many sales calls recently, I've started to get a bit fed up (no one likes the hard sell!) so I've invented Dave. When they ask, Dave is the business owner who makes all the decisions, but is frequently not available to take their call. I do take messages for him though. I know, lying is wrong, but sometimes they just don't realise that no means no! My problem is, I feel too sorry for the poor person earning minimum wage plus commision on the other end of the phone (although not sorry enough to use their service that I don't need!). Hence fictitious Dave (plus, many assume the business owner is a man anyway, so I'm just giving them what they want!). By confessing this I've cleared my conscience somewhat, and at least I'll know that anyone asking for Dave hasn't done their research! Anyone else struggle with receiving sales calls? I'm sure it's bad for the soul!

We've sold loads of these, and those customers who are local are always popping back to show me what they've created with it this time. It's constantly selling out in lots of the major stores so grab it when you can! Basically, you paint it over your chosen nail colour, and watch the pattern emerge. It's great for creating animal print effects, and I love using it over the Barry M Neon Pink Nail Paint. Forgot to say yesterday, did you see our advert in the Spree section of the Northants Evening Telegraph on Monday? Right next to the piece on Hello Kitty. So it might be worth remembering we have fantastic Hello Kitty rings and earrings in the Temporary:Secretary section of our online shop!

Busy day yesterday, with lots of the Smashing Glass going out. The sale is still on and there are some real bargains to be had, especially among the Max C and Worn Free pieces. Have you had a look yet?

Sadly, we've now removed the Dr Marten New Authentic Zip Wedge boots from our online shop as these are no longer available in the colours we stock, although apparently they are still doing them in black, brown and red, so if you're interested, get in touch and we can put in a special order for you. We're also still waiting on the patent 8-Eye boots to come in, hopefully end of March/beginning April, so those who have ordered them, thank you for your patience! And if you've had your eye on some, get your order in quick, so we can guarantee you a pair in the colour and size you want.

Pick Of The Day is this gorgeous navy blue with cream trim Max C dress. It was originally £40 but is now in the sale for £25! It's a lovely light dress, perfect for spring, when the nautical look is back yet again. It also reminds us of Alice In Wonderland, and we think it looks great with the Temporary:Secretary Alice In Wonderland Charm Necklace. Because this is now a sale item (and has been much loved and admired!) we only have the dress in stock in limited sizes and numbers, but hopefully we'll have yours!

Got The Joy Formidable's new album, The Big Roar, on in the shop this morning. Really loving it! It manages to be reminiscent of a lot of the 90s girl-fronted indie/rock that I loved, while sounding completely up to date. Really worth checking out if you get chance. The one added here is not on the album, but does feature Paul Draper of Mansun.

Anyway, now that you've had your musical interlude, I think it's time for Pick Of The Day.

This is the Death Kitty Vampette Dress. It's now in the sale at only £15, but stock and size availability are very very limited! It's a gorgeous cotton halterneck dress with a zip fastening at the back. The 50s retro style of the dress and print make it such a cute piece, a very in keeping with retro-influenced stylistas like Paloma Faith and Imelda May. The print features lollipops, sunglasses and fangs. Whether you're more Twilight or True Blood, show your vamp love without resorting to all black. As with everything, we only had these in stock in limited numbers and they were very popular so can't guarantee we'll have these long!

We've been thinking about job titles a lot today. At some places I've worked at in the past, people get so hung up on them, so we take a slightly more, erm, unorthodox approach. I still think one of the greatest job titles I've ever had was during a stint working for Subway, when my badge declared me to be a Sandwich Artist. To be honest, I only applied for the job because I wanted that job title. Currently, when anyone asks, I tend to give my title as Megalomaniac (because as TS Eliot wrote "The naming of cats is a difficult matter..."). I find it amusing, as do most people I tell, but some do just look confused, and others more than a little worried. Isabel, who helps out sometimes, has bagged the title Executive Minion, but I doubt that will be appearing on a CV any time soon. Generally, when I talk about Pete I refer to him as Unorthodox Boy, but he declared this morning he preferred Unorthodox Bitch (more to do with him doing the hoovering than a nasty temperament). Brian, often referred to as our Official Photographer, is equally often referred to as The Hippy On The Stairs. I'm yet to come up with titles for the rest of our helpers (Tahnee especially defies description!) but I'm going to get to work on it (in full consultation with them, obviously). Any of you had any particularly great job titles over the years? Any suggestions? Do let us know.

This Worn Free 'Punk Magazine' t-shirt is a licensed replica of the one worn by Joey Ramone in New York, 1975. It comes with the coveted WF tag showing Joey in his original tee. These are now in the sale, as well, so they're a total bargain for a Worn Free tee. Their t-shirts are great quality and in my experience last really well. This one is only left in a Large and numbers are very very limited so if you want one, speak now or forever hold your peace!

Wow, another big rush for the Karl Phillips & The Midnight Ramblers album yesterday! For those readers who are London-based, they're playing Babalou in Brixton on Friday so if you get chance, go check them out.

Pick Of The Day today are our range of Stargazer hair dyes. The Stargazer dyes are semi-permanent, which means you can change your mind as often as you like. Personally, I'm a big fan of Violet at the moment, having just switched from Rouge. The best sellers are constantly changing, but Rouge, Tropical Green, Coral Blue and Hot Red are always popular, and as I mentioned before, there's been a surge in the more ginger/auburn colours like Dawn, Copper and Coral Gold. Below are our top tips for using the Stargazer dyes, garnered from years of personal experience and chatting with our model, Tahnee (also the official Unorthodox colourist and a trained hairdresser).:

1. The colours shown on the display stand demonstrate what the dyes come out as on bleached white hair. If you're not bleaching your hair, or it tends to bleach only to orange or yellow, take that into consideration. As the Stargazer dyes don't contain bleach, you might want to consider pre-lightening for best results.

2. Don't see the exact colour you want? Stargazer dyes can be mixed to make your perfect shade.

3. Noone can really predict how long the colour will last. It depends on a lot of factors such as the base colour of your hair, how often you wash it, products you use, the condition it's in when you dye it. To help it last longer, try using dry shampoo when you can, don't use conditioner just before you dye your hair (it prevents the dye from getting a good hold) and use a leave-in spray one when you hair is coloured rather than a wash-out one, don't spend ages rinsing your hair (you're not aiming for the water to run clear like with some permanent dyes).

4. If you have pre-lightened your hair and want to put off fading, think about choosing a shade darker than you normally would. Lighter shades fade faster.

5. If you're not sure, just ask! Whether you're buying in store or online, just get in touch. We want you to be happy with your results so if we can be of any help, we're more than happy to waffle on about these dyes given the chance!

6. Not ready to take the plunge on the wilder colours? Why not try one of the Stargazer Neon Gel Colours? They wash out but might give you an idea of what you want.

I've been doing a bit of New Years trendspotting this month, and I've noticed the following things seem to be getting really popular... Dr Martens in Cherry Red (especially 10 and 14 eyelet ones), all patent Dr Martens (which we can't get in stock for love nor money until around March, I'm afraid), ginger and auburn tinged Stargazer hair dyes, Irene Mosedale beaded necklaces and bracelets, and our Monsalina Chic dresses are getting loads of attention! Remember, most of our accessories and clothes are available in limited numbers only, so if you love it, make it yours (especially with the sale on!).

The biggest pile of post just arrived, so it's going to be a brief one today, and I'm going to crack on with our Pick Of The Day...

Hope you all had a good weekend. Had a fantastic Saturday night watching local bands Transmission and The Francis Jetty at Retro-Beat at The Horseshoe in Wellingborough. Was a fantastic gig!

We were in yesterday's Northants Evening Telegraph, in their Spree section. The article can be found here and the pictures from it are below.

For the record, the dress I'm holding is one of the Monsalina Chic Grecian Tunic dresses, and the mannequin is all dolled up in the Death Kitty Bow Skirt, RedRock Fashion Bleach-Out Tunic Vest and Temporary:Secretary Guitar Necklace. I usually try to think of a music-related pun for the blog title that relates to the content in some way. However, today's was just perfect as it was!

Her pieces have a fantastic whimsical style that is very distinctive. They're all signed originals, created on handmade recycled cotton rag paper. Sundae Girl is approx 11cm x 15.5cm so she's small enough to fit anywhere! Great as a thoughtful gift for a loved one, or just a fantastic treat for yourself and your space.

First up, we'll do our Pick Of The Day.

Our Pick Of The Day for today is this Monsalina Chic Grecian Tunic Dress in Black (we do have a random size 12 red one lurking around the shop, though, if that takes your fancy). It's been created out of layers of chiffon so you get the floaty effect without compromising your modesty! It has metallic embroidery and sequins around the neckline to add a little extra glamour, and the elasticated waist means it fits like it was made for you. I always have to stress with Monsalina Chic dresses that we find their pieces are fantastic quality, really well designed and made, and great value, so you're getting a classic piece to last you through the seasons. This dress looks great with leggings, or teamed with some gladiator sandals in the summer. As with everything we stock, numbers are limited so if you love it, make it yours now! This week we have sold out of the Death Kitty Nautical Star Bag, so we wave a fond farewell to those and hope those of you who nabbed one are loving it. Don't despair though, as we have our fantastic Max C Damien bags (as seen in Pick Of The Day yesterday), as well as handmade bags and purses by Maddie and D'n'J. We are also now out of stock of the RedRock Bleach-Out Tunic Vests, but their head honcho Kiran has got me all excited about their new Spring pieces, due in the next few months. Look out for them in Company magazine, as well!

In other and completely unrelated news, I finished reading Stieg Larsson's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (yes, I know, totally behind the crowd, but better late than never) and it was absolutely fantastic. Want to check out the Swedish film version now! So yes, if anyone is looking for a good read (even if you're not usually a crime thriller fan, which I'm not), then this will keep you occupied! Just a little recommendation from the Unorthodox team!

Also, congratulations to our model Tahnee (shown above) and her husband Matt (also one of our models) on their baby boy's first birthday this week (we're not orchestrating the breeding of our future models, I swear!). Happy birthday Zack!

Our Pick Of The Day is this fantastic Max C London 'Damien' handbag. This is the grey one and it's studded in little silver coloured skulls. It has 2 internal pockets, a zip fastening, and is great quality. I can definitely vouch for this as I've been using one in khaki since they came in and it always gets comments and is big enough for all the junk I choose to lug around! I'm really chuffed with mine! It's also available in the aforementioned khaki colour, as well as in black with gold coloured detail. Got the Evening Telegraph stopping in this morning to give them a bit of a tour of the shop and our lovely bits and bobs, so looking forward to that and will put the resulting piece up here when it's in the paper.

Due to a variety of exciting technical difficulties, we didn't get our Pick Of The Day done yesterday, so it's rolling over to today.

Our Pick Of The Day is the debut album by Karl Phillips & The Midnight Ramblers, out on Medical Records. They're a Wellingborough based band, but this album has been getting great reviews all over the country, and they're fresh from their recent gig at Proud in Camden. Best described as a mix of hip hop, ska, indie and rock (which really doesn't give you much of an idea, so you'll just have to buy it and have a listen). The lyrics have humour and edge in equal measure, and you're bound to find something you can relate to in it.
